Shejkh Arafat ibn Hasen:

Takimi i shqiptarëve me Shejh Muhammed ibën Hadi elMedkhalij

Takimi i shqiptarëve me Shejh Muhammed ibën Hadi elMedkhaliun, All-llahu e ruajttë

Is Tazkiyah (or Graduation) Required Before One Teaches and Gives Da'wah? Part 11: Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan
Filed under: Da'wah
Sunday, October 06 2013 - by Abu.Iyaad
Key topics: Tazkiyah

Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan answers a question regarding tazkiyaat (commendations) and shahaadaat (certificates) with respect to knowledge and teaching (mp3):

He says, esteemed Shaykh, may Allaah grant you success: Is it sufficient for a person who wishes to teach the people the affairs of their religion, is it sufficient that he holds a university certificate, or must he have commendations (tazkiyaat) from the Scholars?

It is necessary to have knowledge... Not everyone who holds a certificate becomes a scholar (by way of that), (but) knowledge is vital, and understanding (fiqh) of the deen of Allaah! A certificate does not indicate knowledge. A person could hold (a certificate) yet he is the most ignorant of people... and he may not have a certificate yet he is the most knowledgeable of people. Did Shaykh Ibn Baz have a certificate with him? Did Shaykh Ibn Humayd? Did they have certificates? Yet alongside this, they were the leading Imaams of this time. Hence, the speech (revolves) around the presence of knowledge in a person, and (the presence) of understanding in a person! Not about his certificates and commendations (tazkiyaat), that is not given consideration. And the reality will uncover a person, when an issue comes along, or a calamity arises, then the (true) scholar will become clear from the pseudo-scholar and the ignoramus. Yes.

Is Tazkiyah (or Graduation) Required Before One Teaches and Gives Da'wah? Part 9: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymeen

Key topics: Tazlyah

Shaykh Muhammmad bin Saalih al-Uthaymeen stated the following (Download File), and this answer relates to a land where there are no scholars and students of knowledge undertake the task of teaching the people:

And this (questioner) says: We mentioned yesterday that whoever depends upon books in acquisition of knowledge then he will err more than he will be correct. And thus, likewise today in (many of) the Islamic countries there are not to be found scholars to whom the people rturn in the affairs of their religion. As a result, a group of youth who have not studied except from books have undertaken to direct them and teach them. So what is obligatory upon these youth?[Esteemed Shaykh]: It is obligatory upon them to pursue and investigate the truth out of necessity. And the meaning of that is not that a person cannot be a scholar, mujtahid except through mashaayikh (shaykhs). For there are scholars who reached a great amount of knowledge yet they did not study with mashaayikh. However, this (occurs) little./quote]
Note: The Shaykh makes tafseel (detail) on the issue of books (refer to this article), wherein he says (in his Kitaab al-Ilm):

There is no doubt that knowledge is acquired through seeking it from the Scholars and seeking it from books because the book of the scholar is the scholar himself, for he is speaking to you through his book. So when seeking (knowledge) is not possible from the people of knowledge, then he seeks knowledge from books. However, acquiring knowledge through the route of the scholars is closer to its acquisition than through the route of books because the one who seeks it through books will toil (struggle) more and requires a great deal of striving. And alongside this some affairs might be hidden from him such as Sharee'ah principles and rules that the people of knowledge have laid down. So it is necessary that he has a reference point from the people of knowledge (to return back to) in accordance with ability. As for his saying, "Whosoever's guide is his book then his error(s) will be more than what he is correct in" then this is not correct unrestrictedly and nor corrupt unrestrictedly. As for the person who takes knowledge from any book he sees, then no doubt he will err abundantly. And as for the one who in his learning depends upon the books of men known for trustworthiness, reliability and knowledge then this person's errors will not be many and he will be correct in the majority of what he says.

Is Tazkiyah (or Graduation) Required Before One Teaches and Gives Da'wah? Part 8: Shaykh Rabee bin Haadee

Shaykh Rabee' bin Haadee was asked the following question as occurs in the 2nd cassette in the series (الجواب الكافي لمن سأل عن الدواء الشافي), starting from 9m:15s onwards:

When is it right for a student of knowledge to say, "This is what appears most correct to me" or "This is what I believe" and when does he deserve to give circles of teaching independently, for many youth hasten to put themselves forward in gatherings (to teach), so what is your advice?
The Shaykh responded:

My advice to the Salafi youth is that they prepare themselves to strive (hard) in acquiring knowledge and that they learn. However, when they are in a land where there are ignorant people and there are no scholars (present), but there is a student of knowledge and (those people) are in need of the little knowledge he possesses, then I hold that he should offer what he has of knowledge. And we do not make binding the affairs upon the youth who sees the world darkened with deviations, ignorance and shirk such that we say to him, "Do not put yourself forward to teach the people until you have reached the level of Ibn Taymiyyah and Ahmad bin Hanbal." Allaah, the Exalted, said, "Allaah has made clear what He has made unlawful to you, except that which you are forced by way of compulsion" (6:119). Necessity makes permissible what is otherwise prohibited as is said in the legislative principle.
The Shaykh continues:

Meaning, when he is amongst the peasantry (in desert regions) observating the innovations (that are present), the abandonment of prayer and he knows what are innovations and what are the sunnah affairs, likewise, some of you know something of knowledge, then he teaches something from the Qur'an, something of tajweed, he teaches them the books which he has studied, al-Usool al-Thalaathah (the three principles), Kitab al-Tawhid. Now, I am not encouraging a student of knowledge to position himself as a scholar, not, (but I am saying that) when he is forced, and there is not a scholar other than him, and he has something of knowledge, then let him offer what he has of knowledge and (at the same time) to never speak in the deen of Allaah with ignorance. It is not permissible for him except to ascribe to Allaah except the truth, He, the Exalted said, "Say: "(But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are great evil (lustful) sins, whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteousoppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allaah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allaah of which you have no knowledge." (7:33). So saying things about Allaah without knowledge is unlawful and is from the greatest of major sins. Rather, it is greater than disbelief in Allaah because disbelief in Allaah, misguidance and innovations all arise from speaking about Allaah without knowledge. Hence, it is the vilest of things, and greatest of major sins, irrespective of whether it appears from a scholar or an ignorant person.
The Shaykh continues:

Hence, when he sees the people (in need) compelled towards the little knowledge he possesses, then let him speak only within the limits of what he knows and not to transgress his limit. So when he is asked about what he does not know, he says, "Allaah knows best", he says, "I do not know", for (indeed) the greatest of the greatest of the scholars and the leading Imaams amongst the Imaams say, "I do not know", where one of the major students of (Imaam) Maalik says, "If I wished to fill my slate (tablet) with the saying of Maalik, 'I don't know', I would have done so." And all of you know that he was asked about forty matters, he responded to four of them and said "I don't know" about the rest. And in that time, when a man repeated the saying "I don't know" often, he became great in the eyes of the people. But as for today, if he says "I don't know" in just one or two matters, they say, "Jaahil (ignoramus)". Upon these scales (of measure) it is necessary that one abstains and that (even) half or a quarter of the scholars are not led to speak about Allaah without knowledge on account of the people. But in any case, it is desirable for a scholar to cultivate his students to say "I don't know" for it is one half of knowledge (to not speak without knowledge).

Is Tazkiyah (or Graduation) Required Before One Teaches and Gives Da'wah? Part 10: Shaykh Ahmad Bazmul

Shaykh Ahmad Bazmul, in his lecture entitled (نصائح و توجيهات للمتصدرين للدعوة), gave the following piece of advice about acquiring knowledge:

An error! It is unlawful upon you, beware! It is unlawful for you legislatively that you acquire knowledge from one whose condition you do not know and from one who has not been commended and (not from those) whose speech is accepted! It is unlawful upon you because this knowledge comprises deen (religion), and you worship Allaah through this deen. Will you worship Allaah through (the deen) by way of an evil man? Or from a man of truth? From a man of truth ... As for some of the Salafis, then no (they should not do this), ever. One of them comes to them, he puts himself forward, then they gather around him, he teaches them tafseer, he teaches them the ahaadeeth of the rulings, he teaches them supportive (instrumental) sciences, he teaches them the Arabic language, grammar, principles of jurisprudence, and they all gather around him. And they do not know his condition. Then after that he starts laying down baatil (false) principles, and he lays down for them principles against Salafiyyah, and he comes and waters down the principles of Salafiyyah or he presents them with an incorrect understanding, and thus strikes at the youth (in this way)! No! By Allaah! I wil not sit with him until I know who he is and I ask about him. By Allaah that you sit in your own house (sufficing) with what you already know of the prayer, zakaah, and fasting is better for you than that you sit with a man who will misguide you. Because if you go astray, you will not know as to whether you will be with the people of Paradise or with the people of Hellfire!

It was said to Imaam Ahmad: A man from Ahl al-Sunnah and he is from Ahl al-Sunnah, he dies and he has sins, is he an evil man or is his cavity (in the grave) a cavity to the Fire? He said, "Be silent, for if a man dies upon the Sunnah, then his grave is a garden from the gardens of Paradise." It was said to him: A man from Ahl al-Bid'ah is a mujtahid, a worshipper" meaning, does he have status? He said, "Be silent, for a man from Ahl al-Bid'ah, his cavity (in the grave) is a cavity from the cavities of the Fire." Destruction! Destruction!!"

For this reason it is desirable that you know, if you are a Salafi (in truth), that you do not sit with anyone who comes out (to teach) until you know his condition. How do you know his condition? By the commendation of the Scholars. By asking about him. O brother, go to him, ask him, who are you? Who did you study with? Who are you Shaykhs? If you do not know, connect with him. He will say to you, "By Allaah, I studied with Shaykh al-Suhaymee, Shaykh al-Luhaydaan, Shaykh Rabee..." connect (and find out) because some of them they attend (lessons) with Shaykh Rabee or Shaykh al-Suhaymee or with Shaykh so and so, yet he (himself) is a hizbee. Ask! Or he could be a Salafi who has changed! Ask (first), do not sit straight away.

O brother! Bring the cassettes of Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen, Shaykh al-Najmee, Shaykh Ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy upon them, Shaykh Rabee, Shaykh al-Fawzaan and listen (to them). It is not binding for you to attend (lessons) with this unknown. So this is the way and methodology from the ways of the Salaf (to follow), if you are indeed a Salafi (in truth).
Note

May Allaah reward our brother Abu Hafsah Kashiff Khan for his recent lecture at Masjid Ahl al-Qur'an wal-Hadeeth - very relevant to the issue raised here by Shaykh Ahmad Bazmul - in which our brother (hafidhahullaah) points out that the likes of Tahir Wyatt, when in Madeenah, would invite Yasir Qadhi to his house whereupon Yasir Qadhi would give da'wah to newcomers and offer to teach them tajweed and the likes. This is at a time when the Salafis had been warning against Yasir Qadhi for years due to his clear leanings towards the Surooriyyah, Turaathiyyah - and one can see the pitiful state Yasir Qadhi has reached today. At the same time Tahir Wyatt would speak against Salafis. You should not be deceived by these types of people, even if they are graduates, boast that they have sat with the scholars, have tazkiyaat, sit in the Haram and teach, and even if they walk on water and fly in the air on top of all of that! As Shaykh Rabee said in very apt words when speaking about tazkiyaat (commendations) and shahaadaat (certificates), (إنما يزكي الرجل عمله), "That which givestazkiyah to a man is his action." You can listen to Abu Hafsah's lecture here.
